Discover Woodchester Lake

A peaceful, hidden valley in the Cotswolds, containing an unfinished Victorian mansion, a chain of lakes, grassy slopes, and extensive woodland, crossed by paths and tracks.

Woodchester Park is a National Trust property between Nailsworth and Stroud in central Gloucestershire. At nearly three miles long, the sizable area is home to pasture, conifer plantations, ancient woodland a series of small fishpond, and a chain of five lakes.

The tranquil wooded valley contains a ‘lost landscape’ with remains of an 18th- and 19th-century landscape park. Park Mill Pond is the last of these lakes and features a man-made island that is now a heronry. If you look close enough, you might be able to spot some wild fish, including a large carp.

As you make your way around the secret woodland trail, you’ll come across an intact boathouse overlooking the west end of Middle Pond, built in the early 1800s. With a distinctive red roof trim and red wooden windows, this is a perfect spot for a quick stop to take in the scenery. You’ll find a little wooden boat on the bank, perfecting for sitting on and enjoying the fresh air. From the car park, this three-way-marked walk is around 3.5 miles and provides excellent views of the park.

If you’re looking for somewhere to take your four-legged companion, Woodchester Park attracts thousands of dog walkers every year. Well-behaved dogs on leads are always welcomed and bins are provided around the site.
